U.S. Soccer wasn’t sure at first, but it’s official: Alex Morgan’s goal in the 12th second against Costa Rica on Wednesday (Feb. 10) was the earliest in the history of the U.S. women’s team.
Morgan also has the latest goal in team history: On Aug. 6, 2012, her header at 122:22 gave Team USA a 4-3 victory over Canada in their epic semifinal at the London Olympics.
The outcome shattered the hearts, spirit and psyche of the Canadians, who led three times that day, only to see the Americans claw their way back each time. Morgan’s game-winner came as the last seconds of stoppage time were ticking away in overtime.
The victory sent the U.S. women on to the championship game, where they beat Japan 2-1 to take the gold medal. .
