This is big news.
Many were starting to speculate about Sydney Leroux’s future with the U.S. team. The once-fearsome striker had all but disappeared from coach Jill Ellis’ plans, largely — but not entirely — because of injuries.
Questions about Leroux’s future have has been answered, at least for 2016. She and husband Dom Dwyer, who plays for Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer, are having a baby. Leroux will miss both the 2016 Olympics and the 2016 season of the National Women’s Soccer League.
Jeff Kassouf of The Equalizer has the story.
Leroux, who played previously in the NWSL for the Seattle Reign and the Western New York Flash, was traded to FC Kansas City in January. It was a deal she had long sought so she and Dwyer could live in the same city.
FC Kansas City, the defending NWSL champion, earlier learned that it will be without forward Amy Rodriguez in 2016. She’s pregnant with her second child. And the team lost the great Lauren Holiday to retirement.
