“Due to a dispute with their federation,” the women of the Australian national team are refusing to play two scheduled matches, in Detroit and Birmingham, against the United States.
Haiti has been named as a last-minute substitute for the matches on Thursday (Sept. 17) and next Sunday (Sept. 20).
Here’s the story from U.S. Soccer.
More than 31,000 tickets have been sold for each of the games.
Australia, ranked No. 9 in the world, gave the Americans a tough match in the opening round of this summer’s World Cup. Team USA won 3-1, but it took a couple of valiant saves by Hope Solo and a pair of goals by Megan Rapinoe to hold the Aussies at bay.
After the match, the Australians boasted on their website that they had been the better side, and that the Americans “just aren’t that good.”
