The New York Post says the U.S. women’s team will play England in November at Yankee Stadium — part of the team’s Victory Tour.

U.S. Soccer says that’s baloney.

One of them isn’t telling the truth.

We’ll know which one soon enough.

If it has to choose, the Post will take an entertaining story over an accurate one every time. And, as the headlines below illustrate, its  editors don’t waste a lot of time fretting about balance or civility.

Still, the story may well be true — no matter how forcefully U.S. Soccer denies it.  It’s worth noting that the New York tabloid is owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.  Murdoch also owns Fox, which broadcast this summer’s World Cup from Canada.

Fox soccer commentators Leslie Osborne and Heather Mitts are former members of the U.S. women's team.

So it’s  quite possible — likely, even — that within Rupert’s stable there are reporters who are solidly sourced in the women’s soccer community.
