Sydney Leroux is expected to be out for up to three months after surgery on her right ankle, U.S. Soccer said.

The forward, who was not herself in the World Cup, “has an accessory bone in her right ankle that has been causing pain over the last six months,” the federation said. The piece of bone is being removed.

Unlike in its announcement that Alex Morgan would miss three to four weeks because of knee surgery, U.S. Soccer did not characterize Leroux’s procedure as “minor.”

Leroux is on the roster of the Western New York Flash in the National Women’s Soccer League.

The team is in fifth place, at 4-5-3, with eight games remaining. The top four teams make the playoffs.
